once upon a time, at Kenwood park

A couple months ago while we were playing at the park, we saw a sign for a summer soccer league. For 3-4 year-olds, which we realize is totally ridiculous. I mean, 3 year-olds playing soccer?! Ridiculous. But in the year of the World Cup everyone wants to play soccer. So we signed our soon-to-be-3-year-old up. And then we spent weeks eagerly awaiting. Sonia was convinced she was playing in the World Cup. She proudly told everyone about it. On that much-anticipated Thursday afternoon we picked her up from school and drove to the field. She was very excited. And then she was not. Just like that. Not only did she not once touch the soccer ball, she spent the hour laying on her back, looking at the sky and nibbling on grass. She wore her jersey for about 20 minutes before dramatically ripping it off. The others parents watched sympathetically.

We went back for the next game, and the next. She touched the ball a few times, warmed up once, and at moments enjoyed the experience. And then she enjoyed it no longer. So we gave up. We'll wait till she's a bit older. This will make a great story if she one day ends up playing in the World Cup.
